Hello! My name is Julia, and I am the founder and Artistic Director of Lawton Dance Collective. I am so glad you are here!
A little bit about me and how LDC got started! I grew up in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where I learned how important the arts are for establishing a voice and putting good out into the world. My early training included multiple styles of dance and emphasized creativity and collaboration as the pillars of art. I spent my early life dancing, playing multiple instruments, participating in musical theater productions, making art projects, and putting on full-length, original productions in my home, which I forced my family and friends to take part in & watch. Though the work looks a bit different now, I carry that wonder and excitement about the possibilities of making art with me in my professional life.
For college, I moved to New York to attend Adelphi University, where I had many opportunities to discover new ideas, try new ways of moving and creating, and dive deep into the things that felt most meaningful. In May of 2024, I graduated with my BFA in Dance, along with a minor in Art and Design Education, which has given me a unique perspective on teaching dance and working with dancers. I was also a member of the Honors College, which encouraged me to look at the world and my own work through an inquisitive and research-driven lens.
It has been a lifelong dream of mine to bring together a company of dancers to explore, create, and share together. After graduating, I began working on putting together a full evening of works to present at Arts On Site in NYC in September. I am so fortunate to have built such a wonderful community of dancers and friends who were willing to jump on board and pour their hearts into that process. Throughout the summer, it became clear to me that we were not just building a show, but a company.
I feel honored and inspired to continue dancing and creating alongside these generous, spirited artists.
Thank you for taking the first steps to connect with us and support our work!
With love,
Julia
