We began this project with a question: how can joy be as urgent as suffering? The answer may be that the two are inextricably linked, that it “hurts just as much as it is worth” (Zadie Smith). In our conversations, we fixated on the beauty of really noticing the world around us and how, through attempting to understand and connect to the energy of nature and one another, we might experience something like joy, and all that comes with it.
This framework led us to the artwork of Hilma af Klint, an early
twentieth century Swedish artist and Spiritualist, whose paintings are among the first abstract works in Western art history. While creating Just As Much, we spent time with her paintings, investigating how we could physically embody the patterns, colors, and energy of her work.
